This trade is a follow-up to the earlier transactions involving Fox joining the Spurs and Lavine coming to the Kings as his replacement. The second-round pick from Denver sent by Sacramento in this three-team deal, along with Sissoko, were acquired through these trades.
The more significant aspect of this move was trading Huerter to Chicago, allowing the Kings to absorb Valanciunas's salary without worrying about luxury tax implications. By choosing not to utilize their cap flexibility for Tre Jones’s contract (who went to Chicago in exchange for Fox), it indicates that they prioritize strengthening their frontcourt over finding a traditional point guard substitute.
The addition of Valanciunas provides size at 2.11 meters and weighing 120 kg—a much-needed presence compared to Trey Lyles who stands at only 2.06 meters but primarily plays power forward behind Sabonis as starting center.
Apart from being an effective low-post scorer or offensive rebounder option, Valanciunas has also demonstrated solid performance on ball screens throughout his career—ranking among those centers leading in such actions per Second Spectrum's tracking data over six seasons; notably including Sabonis himself.
